Zeng Yichun meets Directors of Personnel of FAO and WFP

Zeng Yichun, Member of CPC Leading Group of MOA, Director General of Personnel and Labour, met with Monica, Director of Personnel Department of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and Purina, Director of Personnel Department of World Food Programme (WFP). The two sides exchanged views on strengthening cooperation in human resources.

Zeng pointed out that China has a good relationship with FAO and WFP and the two organizations actively support China’s agricultural development, which has played a positive role in China’s agricultural development. Meanwhile, Chinese government also actively supports the work of FAO and WFP and duly fulfills its obligations as a member country. To strengthen the bilateral cooperation in different areas is not only beneficial to China but also conducive to the world food security and agricultural development. The cooperation in human resources is an effective way to improve the existing cooperation, which should be a priority of cooperation in the future.

Zeng stressed that the recruitment of Chinese staffs in FAO and WFP is beneficial to enhancing the cooperation between China and the two organizations and safeguarding the interests of developing countries. With the care and support of the incumbent and previous Director-Generals and Executive Directors, the representation of China has been improved but is still below the fare level. The insufficiency in representation will become more outstanding as China further increases its donations and contributions. Therefore, Zeng put forward a 3-point proposal: first, strengthen cooperation in such programs as junior professional officers and internship to allow more young Chinese to understand, support and participate in the work of FAO and WFP; second, give Chinese staffs more consideration for senior positions and pay attention to the selection and appointment of Chinese staffs working in FAO and WFP; and third, establish interactive mechanisms between the personnel departments of the two sides and enhance exchanges and communication.

The two Directors gave positive responses to Zeng’s proposal. Niu Dun, Permanent Representative of China to the UN Agencies for Food and Agriculture, also attended the meeting.
